December 24th, 2007

Dear BSERC,

I just wanted to thank you all for making this Fall 2007 quarter memorable. I miss you all immensely, but I’m excited to see what 2008 has in store. May your Christmases be wonderful and blessed.

Lemon scones

May 16th, 2007

Dear Bserc,

I know that this does not pertain to the Word of God or any such Christian topic, unless one can argue that lemon scones were Jesus’ favorite pastry, but here is the recipe I keep forgetting to put up:

1 1/2 cup flour
3 Tbs sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 lemon’s zest
6 Tbs Butter (chilled)
1 lemon’s juice
8 Tbs whipping cream

Preheat oven 375 F

Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and lemon zest in a mixing bowl. Using a pastry cutter (I just use 2 knives) cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbles. Add the juice and the whipping cream and mix with a wooden spoon until you form a dough (may require you to add more flour). I try to use my hands so that I can knead the dough, of course, constantly having to re-flour my hands and the dough. You can either drop them onto a floured cookie sheet by the tablespoonful or try to shape them on a cutting board.

Bake for 12 minutes or until you can lift the scones off the sheet without it sticking. Let cool.

You don’t have to, but I drizzle them with a glaze made out of powdered sugar and lemon juice.

Enjoy!

Love, Margret

Big Things are Coming!

May 10th, 2006

Hmm … I wonder who will read this first. Or will you all hear it at BSERC tonight? :)

I just wanted to brag a little bit (horrible, I know). Yesterday, I installed both a prayer board and a photo gallery. Now, you all have no excuse to sign up and use them. I would just like to think that I didn’t spend all of my time yesterday (not doing my prospectus!) installing these two amazing programs just so you can ignore me. Pardon me if that sounded harsh, but I’d really hope you guys use them.

As follows:
Prayer Board - http://prayer.bserc.org/
Photo Gallery - http://gallery.bserc.org/

I love you. Truthfully.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ that you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23-4)

thoughts on justification

March 4th, 2006

I read Simon Cozens post about justification. His “now-common questions” for Justification by Faith are not all questions I have heard of yet, but then again I haven’t been dabbling much into views of justification. However, there are a couple questions which he listed that I have thought about as well, but without much success in answering:

  • Why do we equate salvation and justification, failing to take note of the wider sense in which salvation is used in the Bible?
  • If righteousness is imputed (ie. counted, considered) to us, is justification by faith anything more than a legal fiction where God pretends we’re righteous even when He knows full well that we are not? If not, and righteousness is imparted to us, is righteousness a kind of physical thing that it makes sense to pass around?
  • Why did Jesus bother teaching? If Jesus came to save us and that salvation is reduced to the cross as substitution, what was the purpose of His teaching and commandments?

Being raised with this doctrine, I have never really tried to analyze its truthfulness (or “truthiness”, for that matter), so I’m sorta at a loss for where to begin. He presents a couple other views, and the one which he (seemingly) favors sounds quite reasonable to me (despite its name). I’m curious tho’, where have y’all found guidance in understanding the doctrine of justification you believe? I’m looking for reading material/resources.

Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics

March 3rd, 2006

I often read posts by Simon Cozens, and he just posted concerning a Christian group/church breaking down the success of missions in terms of numbers and not humans. I’m not sure, but I believe the peeps he mentions are associated with Fuller, where I considered going a year ago. Anyway, I highly recommend reading it. It’s not that long, and, like most of what he writes, it’s food for thought.
